    Hi,

Would someone know the function of the ignition switch component in the photo? It attaches to the ignition switch and has two wires. Thanks.

There doesn't seem to be any mention of this ignition switch item in the Haynes workshop manual either.

Strange looking thing, it seems to have a rotary shaft on one side as it might be connected to the ignition barrel, if it didn't know better i would say it was the ignition switch.....i can see there is a resistor inside it...and the bottom looks like some kind of coil or inductor, the angled bit on one end with a shaft going through it would seem to suggest it fits on and angled mounting and the shaft turns, sort of like a rear wiper motor...but in all honesty i have never seen anything like it, how many terminals has it got, if it only has two you could connect it across a battery with a 5 amp fuse inline see what it does...where did it come from, was it mounted on the car somewhere....? from Fred in Essex.

Is it an automatic? I know the Vectra b would hold the key fairly tight if it wasn't in park. You can still pull it out, just a bit tougher than you'd expect.

Yes, the car is an automatic. I have attached a photo of the ignition switch. The square shaped holder at the top of the photo of the ignition switch is where the component in question fits in. I looked at the Haynes workshop manual for the Astra G again and there is mention of an "Ignition key locking magnet switch" for the automatic transmission wiring diagram. Maybe this is what you are referring to with the Vectra.
