hi all i have an astra 1.6 16v 75000 miles its been parked up for about a week just took it out for a run and its now got a major top end rattle im prity sure its from the camshaft. it used to have a slight cam noise when cold but ok once warmed now all the time. its due an oil change but should i get the cam done first? carnt realy aford to get it done but dont want to chuck money at it to. what will happen if i just leave the camshaft? i will check oil level tommorow not done it for a long time is replacing camshaft an easy job? any advice appreciated

Checking the oil regularly is a lot LOT cheaper than changing a camshaft.

Because you had probably very little & more than likely very old oil in the engine, after it was stood for a week it all drained away from the head leaving metal-metal contact all over the place. Start the engine like that & it's going to do damage to all the moving parts.

Start by changing the oil & filter & put GOOD quality oil in it, you may find that helps a bit in the short term, though it won't save the engine from an early melt-down eventually (or at least a complete rebuild).

yes ive made a basic schoolboy error hardley any oil i checked the dipstick bone dry ive put in a 1 and a half ltrs and its just showing on dipstick i recon it will need at least another half ltr to bring it up to the correct level. these cars just use oil for fun but i havent had any smoke or noticed any leak proberly cos theres been no oil in lol
so whats the best thing i can do to give this engine the best chance i can. it still runs god knows how just camshaft noise im thinking of treating it to an engine flush and magnatec and some additve like slick 50 but i need some advice dont want to fork on for new or rebuild engine

I have no idea what oils Quickfuk use, but any 10/40 semi-synthetic with a new filter will probably keep it sweet as long as you change it again in 6 months.

thanks i usally use gm own brand and change oil and filter every 6 months but because ive been an arss and neglected it i thought id treat it kwick **** like that i wouldnt usealy trust them with **** but i need a couple of tyres and there advertising mobil and national magnatex im gona see who will do the tyres cheaper and take it there many thanks
