hi if its the Skoda then yes my son works for VAG and the ecu carries all the data and previous fault codes
it does erase some data but thats all stored on the VAG central computer
the plug in laptop is linked to VAG via a wireless link in the workshop during the service

yes in fact when the gerbil in the car ECU dies you have to have a new ECU sometime they even upgrade you to a guinea pig
